CMALT 2023
Please note that the majority of this portfolio covers the time when I was employed at Durham University International Study Centre (DUSIC) and Durham Centre for Academic Development (DCAD) (2020-2022).
Context
From 2018 to 2022, I worked in roles as a Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Tutor at Durham University (DU) and as a Tutor and Materials Developer at Durham University International Study Centre (DUISC). In these roles, I prepared international students to study at Durham University. In response to the Covid pandemic in 2020, I was asked to develop e-learning materials for Academic English Skills (AES) (with some continued teaching duties). On account of my work, I was later asked to work with the subject matter expert (SME) for a Critical Reading and Advanced Academic Writing Skills course (CRAAWS) to develop a bespoke course for online and blended learning. Through 2020–2022 I was the CRAAWS module developer and taught AES and CRAAWS.
Prior to working at DU and DUISC, I taught English in the UK and abroad to children and adults in private and state educational settings. This included preparing students for national and international exams, private tutoring for which I created bespoke courses, and working with professionals relocating to the UK for work. Overall, I have experience in resource-rich and resource-poor contexts. Thus, my experience of using technology to enhance education is varied and gives me much to think about when considering the role of technology in teaching and learning.
